BOOKS!
The Big Read is an NEA program designed to encourage community reading initiatives. They've come up with this list of the top 100 books, using criteria they don't explain, and they estimate that the average adult has only read 6 of these.
So, we are encouraged to:
1) Look at the list and bold those we have read.
2) Italicize those we intend to read.
3) Underline the books we LOVE (
4) Reprint this list in our own blogs and share!

Ok, got this list off of Marilee's blog. and the librarian in me couldn't not do it. but I do have a few gripes about it. If this list is for the "average American" asking if they've read the COMPLETE works just isn't going to get marked. And Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe is really here twice. you can read just it or the whole of Narnia!
And don't ask me about some of these!!! It's been a very very long time since I read most of them! LOL you know back in the ages in college.
And they should have put something on here by Diane Gabaldon.
Ahhh the retired life

Though fun to read, I'm not sure Diana Gabaldon is quite in the ranks of classics, such as Victor Hugo and Jane Austen...
ReplyDeleteGive her time. they will be.
ReplyDeleteI actually have to thank the English reading list at Fenwick High School for contributing to at least 5-6 books I read on this list, and that for the most part I did not enjoy.
ReplyDeleteJane Austen I discovered on my own, and am big a fan of her, Jane was after all a fan of the happy ending.
I think that if they have Bridget Jones' Diary on there, then Diana Gabaldon should be too!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jamie, several of the books on there I read in high school. Or in college. No way would I have picked up some of those on my own. Although I found out on my own that I'm a big fan of Russian literature. Oh well.
